University of Iowa Center for Intellectual Freedom Names First Full-Time Director: Carson Holloway

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · States · GSM News

The University of Iowa's Center for Intellectual Freedom has named Carson Holloway, a professor from the University of Nebraska Omaha, as its first full-time director, the university announced. Holloway was selected from more than 60 applicants, of whom three were finalists.

The appointment follows public friction: the center's interim director, de Castro, had urged a pause in the search eight days earlier. The center's fiscal 2027 budget is $238,703; the director's salary has not been set.

The center was created to study and teach intellectual freedom and free inquiry on campus, and Holloway is expected to build out its programming as its first permanent head.
