Senator Durbin Receives Chicago Bar Association's John Paul Stevens Award

Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin received the Chicago Bar Association's John Paul Stevens Award in Chicago on October 20, honoring his decades of work on the Senate Judiciary Committee and his support for the federal judiciary. Durbin said it was a great honor to receive an award named for Justice Stevens, who taught him that government has a responsibility to treat everyone fairly — a belief he carried through his Senate career, including confirming highly qualified federal judges to lifetime appointments.
He also noted his longstanding support for the Legal Services Corporation, which provides basic legal aid to millions of Americans who cannot afford a lawyer. The award was established in 2000 and named for Chicago-born Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, who served 35 years on the Court before retiring in 2010; he died in 2019.
It recognizes lawyers and judges who best embody Stevens's commitment to public service and to making the justice system fair and accessible to everyone in the community.
