National Teen Driver Safety Week: Louisiana's Destination Zero Deaths Urges Parents to Talk Before Handing Over the Keys

October 18-24 is National Teen Driver Safety Week, and Louisiana's Destination Zero Deaths coalition is urging parents and guardians to talk with their children about safe driving before handing over the car keys. Ron Czajkowski, the coalition's Acadiana regional safety coordinator, said the initiative is run with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and that the safety conversation should continue all year, not only this week.
Car crashes remain a leading cause of injury and death for American teenagers aged 15 to 18. In 2024, about 85,947 teen drivers were injured in crashes nationwide, and 2,320 people died in crashes involving a teen driver, including 752 teen drivers themselves.
The coalition works with Louisiana's highway safety partners to cut traffic deaths toward zero.
