Governor Moore Announces $25 Million in Uncompensated Care Grants to Protect Community Health Safety Net

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · States · GSM News

Governor Wes Moore announced $25 million in state grants for uncompensated care at the ninth Bloomberg American Health Initiative Summit, aimed at helping providers that treat uninsured residents. The one-year funding will be administered by the Maryland Health Care Commission and directed to federally qualified health centers and local health departments.

Moore said the money is meant to hold the community health safety net together as federal changes under H.R.1, signed in July 2025, squeeze coverage and provider finances. Clinics use uncompensated care funds to offset the cost of treating patients who cannot pay.

State officials said awards will flow to providers across Maryland based on the volume of uncompensated care they deliver.
