Commerce Secretary Lutnick Announces Sibelco Quartz Materials Investment in North Carolina

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced at a rally in Greenville that Sibelco will invest hundreds of millions of dollars in North Carolina quartz production, Reuters reported.
High-purity quartz is a foundational material for semiconductors, and the Spruce Pine district in North Carolina is the world's leading source. The company did not disclose the site or a timetable for the investment.
Lutnick framed the project as part of rebuilding a domestic supply chain for chip materials. Sibelco's Spruce Pine operations supply quartz used in crucibles for silicon wafer production worldwide; hurricane damage to the area in 2024 briefly highlighted the supply chain's concentration in western North Carolina.
