New York Adds $6.5 Million to Expand Islip Regional Shellfish Hatchery

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · States · GSM News

New York State is adding $6.5 million to expand the regional shellfish hatchery in Islip, bringing total state support to $16.5 million after an initial $10 million in 2024, officials announced. The hatchery supplies seed shellfish for restoration and aquaculture; cage-grown oysters from the region account for about a quarter of the state's oyster production.

The expansion follows a USDA secretarial disaster designation for the shellfish industry. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter welcomed the investment in the town's maritime economy.

State officials say the larger hatchery will raise output of oyster and clam seed for Long Island restoration projects and commercial growers.
