Rhode Island Test Scores Roughly Flat; Gap With Massachusetts Narrows Mainly as Massachusetts Slips

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · States · GSM News

Rhode Island's latest state test results are roughly flat: 33 percent of students scored proficient in English language arts on the RICAS assessment and about 32 percent in math, close to last year's levels. Governor Dan McKee has set a goal of catching Massachusetts by 2030.

John Papay, director of Brown University's Annenberg Institute, noted that the gap with Massachusetts has narrowed mainly because Massachusetts scores declined. Providence's school district, under state control for seven years, faces an open question about the return of its elected school board.

Education officials say the flat statewide results underline the slow pace of post-pandemic recovery.
