Memphis Council Passes Resolution 9-0 Calling for ICE and Tennessee National Guard to Leave the City

The Memphis City Council voted on October 20 to adopt a resolution calling on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Tennessee National Guard to leave Memphis, where both have operated for the past year as part of the Memphis Safe Task Force.
The measure passed with nine votes in favor and one abstention; it was introduced by Council members Cooper-Sutton and Easter-Thomas and is non-binding. Easter-Thomas said the motion grew out of an ICE raid at a Berclair bar that detained 121 people, coming as the task force marks one year in the city.
Council debate also surfaced opposition: one member said the council has no authority to remove the agencies and did not want to give residents false hope, and another supported ICE leaving but not the Guard, saying constituents feel safer after a year of lower crime. The council majority continues to back other task force agencies, including the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the U.S.
Marshals Service.
