U.S. Activists Who Joined France's Protests Announce Three Days of Action in Washington in November, a 'Taxpayer Uprising'

A U.S. activist group whose members travelled to France to join that country's protests has announced plans for three days of action in Washington in November, the New York Post reported on October 20. Code Pink, which the Post described as a feminist anti-war group, has called on protesters to flood the halls of Congress in what it calls 'three days of peaceful resistance', planned for November 10 to 12 and billed as a 'taxpayer uprising'.

The group's leader, Jodie Evans, 72, a Hollywood filmmaker, called on 'people to look at France' as she urged Americans to take to the streets, according to the Post. France has seen more than a week of nationwide protests over education and the cost of living, which turned violent at the weekend with looting and fires in several cities; French authorities have imposed local curfews and promised a massive police presence for further protests planned on Saturday.

Another U.S. group, the Party for Socialism and Liberation, said it would join French protesters in their struggle, writing on Instagram: 'We in the United States stand with you in your struggle against capitalist austerity. We stand with you, because we too demand money for housing and education, instead of war and occupation.'

Critics quoted by the Post accused the groups of importing unrest. Commentator Gonzalez, who fled communist Cuba in the 1970s, told the Post: 'These activists are taught to despise their own society', and said groups involved in elevating the French protests are linked to a network associated with tech millionaire Neville Singham, the husband of Evans. The Post reported that Code Pink has been accused of radicalizing a new generation of activists; the group presents its planned Washington action as peaceful resistance. No U.S. authorities quoted in the reporting announced any measures in response to the November plans.
