BUENOS AIRES — Argentina's Economy Minister Luis Caputo said in Bangkok on October 17, on the sidelines of the IMF and World Bank meetings, that the central bank has bought about $16 billion so far this year, at a pace above $100 million a day, while projects approved under the RIGI investment incentive regime total about $50 billion, with a further $160 billion under review. He said those reserves and commitments give the government room to remove the remaining foreign-exchange restrictions on companies. Analysts including former central bank official Jorge Carrera cautioned that most RIGI figures are future commitments rather than immediate inflows. The government also said it is considering using currency-swap resources with China to bolster dollars available for payments and imports.
