Belgium's Inflation Climbs to 4.7% in September, Highest Level This Year

BRUSSELS — Consumer prices in Belgium rose 4.7 percent year on year in September, Statistics Belgium (Statbel) data show, up from about 4.0 percent in August and just 1.1 percent at the start of the year, the highest level this year. The steady climb reflects higher energy prices and broader cost-of-living pressure. The figures land as the federal government continues negotiations over a €10 billion multi-year budget adjustment, adding to the debate over household purchasing power and public finances. Because Belgium indexes wages and benefits to inflation, higher readings translate directly into higher costs for employers and the state.
