Canada's Inflation Rises to 3.1% in September as Gasoline Prices Jump, Core Measures Ease to Six-Year Low

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · World News · GSM News

OTTAWA — Canada's annual inflation rate rose to 3.1 percent in September from 3.0 percent in August, Statistics Canada said on October 19, moving back above the top of the Bank of Canada's 1 to 3 percent target band. Gasoline prices, up 27.8 percent year on year, were the main driver, while fuel oil prices jumped 57.8 percent, hitting Atlantic provinces hardest. Excluding gasoline, inflation was 2.2 percent, and the central bank's preferred core measures averaged about 1.85 percent, a six-year low. Grocery prices rose 1.7 percent, the smallest increase since May 2024. It is the last inflation reading before the Bank of Canada's October 28 rate decision.
