Bank of Japan Survey Shows Corporate Fund Demand Turning Positive as Funding Conditions Stay Loose

TOKYO — Funding conditions for Japanese companies remain loose despite the Bank of Japan's rate hikes, the central bank's latest survey showed on October 22. The diffusion index for corporate fund demand rose to +3, turning positive for the first time in six quarters, from -1 previously; the survey was conducted from September 9 to October 13. The BOJ raised its policy rate to 1.25 percent on September 18, a 31-year high. Analysts say the pickup in fund demand during a tightening cycle points to firm capital spending and working-capital needs, and the central bank will keep assessing how higher rates feed through to the real economy.
