ASEAN to Discuss Transboundary Haze as Indonesian Fires, Worst in 11 Years, Close Schools in Malaysia

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · World News · GSM News

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia's Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan has said he will personally raise transboundary haze in ASEAN discussions ahead of next month's summit in Manila. Indonesia's fires this year are the worst in 11 years, and smoke drifting into Malaysia has closed schools in several states, with closures in parts of Johor running through October 23. Malaysia has previously offered to send firefighters to help Indonesia tackle the blazes. Haze is a long-running regional issue in Southeast Asia: in the dry season, smoke from land-clearing and peat fires in Indonesia regularly drifts over Malaysia, Singapore and other neighbours.
