Flood-Hit Communities in Myanmar's Tanintharyi Region Face Fighting After Disaster Killed Eight, Local Group Reports

YANGON — Heavy rains on September 25 triggered flooding and landslides in Myanmar's southern Tanintharyi Region, where 44 villages in Tha Yet Chaung Township were hit, eight villagers killed and about 180 houses destroyed, local rights group HURFOM reported on October 22. It said troops from the military's 403rd, 404th and 409th Light Infantry Battalions later advanced into the township's south, clashing with local armed groups near several villages on October 8 and 10, and residents of 11 villages fled their homes. With fighting continuing, aid workers dare not enter some villages, and flood survivors are moving food by boat, the group said. HURFOM documents human rights and disaster conditions in southeastern Myanmar.
