Thursday, October 22, 2026 · World News · GSM News

WELLINGTON — Consumer prices rose 3.7 percent in the year to the September quarter, Statistics New Zealand said on October 22, down from 4.1 percent in the June quarter and below both the 3.8 percent market forecast and the Reserve Bank's 3.9 percent projection; prices rose 0.7 percent in the quarter. Petrol prices were up 19.1 percent year on year, household energy costs rose 9.4 percent, council rates and services 6.2 percent, and food prices 2.1 percent. Inflation remains above the central bank's 1 to 3 percent target band. The Reserve Bank meets next week to decide the official cash rate, and markets are weighing what the softer reading means for the rate path.
