South Africa's Inflation Rises to 4.5 Percent in September, Driven by Transport and Housing Costs

PRETORIA — South Africa's annual consumer price index rose to 4.5 percent in September 2026, Statistics South Africa said on October 21, up from 4.4 percent in August and 4.3 percent in July, with the index increasing 0.4 percent on the month — a second straight monthly rise. Transport prices, up 10.8 percent and contributing 1.5 percentage points, housing and utilities, up 5.2 percent and contributing 1.3 points, and insurance and financial services, up 5.4 percent, were the main contributors. The reading came in below the 4.7 percent median forecast of economists. The data was released ahead of Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana's Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement later the same day.
