Taiwan Issues Land Warning for Typhoon Champi, With 125 Flights Cancelled

TAIPEI — Taiwan's Central Weather Administration issued a land warning on October 22 ahead of powerful Typhoon Champi, and more than 125 flights were cancelled, mostly domestic, while the rail network was so far unaffected, the transport ministry said. The CWA said the storm, once a super typhoon, was still packing gusts of more than 227 kph near its centre and sat about 520 km southeast of Taiwan's southern tip, with a radius of about 320 km covering most of the island. Champi is expected to come closest late on Friday off the northeastern coast before turning north. Total rainfall of nearly one metre is expected in northern mountain areas, and mobile alerts warned coastal towns of waves above six metres. Lai Ching-te urged the public to prepare and avoid mountains and the coast; the interior ministry said no evacuations had yet been reported.
