Vietnam's National Assembly Debates Raising Minimum Tobacco Purchase Age From 18 to 21

HANOI — Deputies in Vietnam's National Assembly debated amendments to the tobacco control law on October 21. Deputy Nguyen Hai Long proposed raising the minimum age for purchasing and using tobacco from 18 to 21. Health Ministry figures cited in the debate put the male smoking rate at 5.46 percent for ages 15 to 19 and 32.6 percent for ages 20 to 24. The wider amendments would also restrict online tobacco sales and displays and enlarge health warnings. The assembly is due to debate the bill further on November 9, and if passed it is proposed to take effect on July 1, 2027.
