San Diego Completes Storm Channel Maintenance in Sorrento Valley: 35 Segments and About 9.65 Miles Maintained This Fiscal Year

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · California · GSM News

SAN DIEGO, California — The Stormwater Department of the City of San Diego, in San Diego County, California, has completed several weeks of storm channel maintenance in the Sorrento Valley area, removing debris, invasive vegetation and trash. The city said Sorrento Valley is among the areas at elevated flood risk during rain events, and the work helps ensure channels can convey stormwater more effectively in the coming rainy season, with a strong El Niño in the forecast.

Mayor Todd Gloria said his administration is carrying out a citywide plan to maintain 67 channel segments covering more than 20 miles this fiscal year, including the Sorrento Valley work; the department's fiscal 2027 plan covers 67 segments totaling 20.3 miles, and since the start of the fiscal year the city has maintained 35 segments totaling approximately 9.65 miles. Council President Joe LaCava noted that Sorrento Valley, in District 1, is a major employment center and transportation hub. Stormwater Department Director Todd Snyder said crews have spent months removing sediment and vegetation from channels across the city. The Sorrento Valley work follows months of channel maintenance in the Chollas Creek watershed, hit hard by the historic January 2024 floods. (GSM, based on the City of San Diego release)
