Hawaii Reports 10th Travel-Related Dengue Case of 2026; Local Transmission Risk Low

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Hawaii Department of Health reported on October 21 a new travel-related case of dengue, bringing the state's 2026 total to 10. The patient was infected while traveling in an area where dengue is common and is not associated with any previous case, the department said. Health teams were dispatched to the affected area for inspection and mosquito control, and the risk of local transmission from this case is considered low.

All 10 cases reported this year involved travel to Pacific island countries and territories. Dengue is not endemic in Hawaii, and cases so far have been limited to travelers, though mosquito species capable of carrying the virus are present in the state.

The department urged residents to eliminate standing water to prevent mosquito breeding. Dengue risk exists year-round in parts of Central and South America, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Pacific, and some countries are reporting higher case numbers than usual this year.
