House Committees Subpoena New Jersey Secretary of State Over 6,600 Noncitizen Voter Registrations

The U.S. House Judiciary Committee announced on October 21 that its chairman, Jim Jordan, and House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil had jointly subpoenaed the New Jersey Secretary of State's office, accusing it of failing to cooperate with a congressional investigation. In a letter to Acting Secretary of State Shirley Emehelu, the chairmen said the office had produced only 12 documents after repeated requests and withheld the rest citing unspecified privilege, obstructing the committees' oversight.

The inquiry stems from the registration of about 6,600 noncitizens as voters in New Jersey between June 2023 and June 2024, about 400 of whom actually cast ballots. Governor Mikie Sherrill attributed the erroneous registrations to a software error at the state Motor Vehicle Commission, a claim the software vendor, Idemia, has denied.

The chairmen said the ineligible registrations raise concerns about enforcement of federal law in New Jersey and could affect American voters' ability to elect their representatives. With the midterms approaching, voter-roll accuracy has become a focus of congressional oversight.
