Kirtland Air Force Base Readiness Exercise Runs October 22-30; Simulated Gunfire Possible

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · States · GSM News

Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque will conduct a readiness exercise from Thursday, October 22, through October 30. Base officials told 96.3 KKOB on October 21 that the exercise is routine training to ensure personnel can respond to a range of situations and maintain combat readiness, and is not connected to any emergency.

During the exercise, residents near the base may hear public-address announcements, simulated gunfire and other training sounds. Some roads and gates on and around the base may close temporarily while the exercise is underway, causing travel delays. The base advised nearby residents to plan trips in advance and expect occasional disturbances through the end of the month.

Kirtland is one of Albuquerque's largest military installations and home to units including the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center; its training activity often affects neighborhoods and commuter routes east of the base.
