Thursday, October 22, 2026 · States · GSM News

Governor Kathy Hochul announced on October 21 that total enrollment at the City University of New York (CUNY) has grown for the fourth consecutive year, with gains across community colleges, four-year colleges and graduate schools. Preliminary fall 2026 figures show systemwide enrollment up 3.2% to about 253,000 students. Community college enrollment rose about 5%, with Bronx Community College and Borough of Manhattan Community College each up 9%. Graduate enrollment climbed to about 31,000, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Since 2022, CUNY's total enrollment has grown nearly 12%, adding about 27,000 students.

A major driver is the governor's free community college program for adults aged 25 to 55 pursuing associate degrees in high-demand fields, which has enrolled about 10,000 adult students. CUNY is also waiving freshman application fees for New York City public school students from September 15 to November 16 as part of the state's College Application Month.
