Three Democratic Sheriffs Deny Endorsing Texas Governor Abbott Despite Campaign Claim

Texas Governor Greg Abbott's reelection campaign ran into an endorsement dispute this week. Abbott announced on Monday, October 19, that 12 Democratic county sheriffs statewide were backing his bid against Democratic State Representative Gina Hinojosa. Three of the sheriffs then publicly said they had done no such thing: Val Verde County Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez, Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar and Zapata County Sheriff Ramon Montes all said they are staying out of the race, the Washington Examiner reported.
By Wednesday evening, October 21, Cuellar's name had been removed from the governor's office news release, while Martinez and Montes remained listed. Cuellar demanded removal on social media, saying Abbott is supporting an opponent of his brother, U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar, in his own reelection race. Martinez said appreciating state support is different from a political endorsement and that he never authorized anyone to use his name.
Abbott is seeking a fourth term. Election Day is November 3.
