$806 Million I-270 Corridor Rebuild Breaks Ground: First Upgrade for Interstate Built in 1965

Colorado Governor Jared Polis, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), local officials and contractor Kiewit Corporation broke ground on October 19 on the I-270 Corridor Improvements project, a total investment of $806 million. The interstate runs east to west through Adams County and north Denver. Built in 1965, it is the only interstate in Colorado that has never received an upgrade, and it now carries more than 100,000 vehicles a day, more than it was designed for.

When complete, I-270 will have two general-purpose lanes and one new tolled Express Lane in each direction, with the Express Lane free for buses, motorcycles and carpools of three or more. The project will also replace 12 aging bridges built in the 1960s, rebuild the Vasquez Boulevard interchange, improve ramps at I-76, York Street and Quebec Street, and build a new pedestrian and bicycle bridge. Construction will occur in three phases: earthwork begins this fall, major bridge construction starts in spring 2027, the first phase is expected to conclude in early 2030, and the full project is expected to conclude in 2033.

"Every day, Coloradans count on I-270 to get to work, get home and keep goods moving. These improvements will make I-270 safer, more reliable, and faster for travelers, and will create good-paying jobs," Governor Polis said at the groundbreaking.
