United Flight From Honolulu to Los Angeles Hits Severe Turbulence on Descent: Four Flight Attendants Injured, One Hospitalized

United Airlines Flight 1157 from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) encountered severe turbulence during its descent on Oct. 21, injuring four flight attendants. The Boeing 777-200, carrying 190 passengers and 10 crew members, landed safely at LAX about 20 minutes behind schedule.
United confirmed that four flight attendants were seen by medical personnel after landing, including one who was transported to a hospital for further treatment; at least two of the attendants suffered neck and back injuries. The airline said no passengers were injured. Flight data reviewed by the New York Post showed the aircraft descending as much as 3,675 feet in one minute during the final portion of the flight. In a radio call to air traffic control, a pilot said the turbulence lasted only a couple of seconds and felt like wake turbulence.
“I was watching a movie and all of a sudden we just dropped,” San Diego resident Marly Wadlington told ABC7. “And it felt like we dropped pretty far. It started shaking, everyone was yelling. We were all super scared.” Another passenger, Coral Pena, said she heard a loud bang, while Tami Dandoy of Lake Havasu, Arizona, said passengers were lifted off their seats; one passenger reported seeing a flight attendant with blood on her head and leg.
The Federal Aviation Administration said it will investigate the incident; the exact cause of the turbulence has not been officially determined.
