Kansas: 11 Communities Win Over $4.2 Million in Federal Airport Infrastructure Grants

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly announced on Oct. 21 that 11 Kansas communities have secured more than $4.2 million in federal funding from the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG) program under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). Combined with more than $212,000 in matching funds from the Kansas Infrastructure Hub and Build Kansas Fund and more than $12,000 in local contributions, this round of airport infrastructure investment totals more than $4.5 million.
The first projects announced include an expansion of the terminal area parking lot at the City of Liberal airport, a $596,842 project, and the Grant County airport project at Ulysses, totaling $512,166. Ray Seif, director of aviation at the Kansas Department of Transportation, said airports serve as access points for air ambulances, agriculture and firefighting aerial applicators, businesses, flight training and pleasure flying, and that the investments improve safety, access and economic appeal for the communities.
Since 2024, the Build Kansas Fund's $51.7 million state investment has provided matching dollars for 110 federal grant awards of nearly $169 million across Kansas, returning more than $3 in federal funds for every $1 of state money. The Kansas Infrastructure Hub currently has 29 applications pending a federal decision, which could bring an additional $177 million to the state.
