Maine Senate Race: Ocasio-Cortez Campaigns in Portland for Jackson

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) traveled to Portland, Maine, on October 22 to campaign for Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Troy Jackson at a student town hall, Politico reported. The event, titled Students vs. Billionaires and hosted by More Perfect University at the State Theatre, covered rising rent and tuition and free speech, with students able to question both speakers directly.
Jackson is challenging Republican Sen. Susan Collins, who is seeking re-election, in the November 3 election. Ocasio-Cortez is the latest national figure to campaign for Jackson in recent weeks, following Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.).
A New York Times/Portland Press Herald/Siena College poll of 619 likely voters, conducted September 15-22, found Collins leading Jackson 49% to 46%, a gap within the poll's 4.9-point margin of error. In the final stretch, the two campaigns have also clashed over the cost of tariffs to Maine families and small businesses, with Jackson's campaign spokesperson calling the tariffs a tax on Maine families and small businesses.
