New Mexico Holds Its Largest Tax-Delinquent Property Auction: About 800 Luna County Parcels Offered in Deming

The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department held the largest delinquent property tax auction in its history on Oct. 22 in Deming, Luna County. About 800 tax-delinquent parcels were grouped into 120 auction items, each containing between two and 15 parcels. The sale began at 9 a.m. at the Luna County Administration Office, 700 S. Silver Ave. in Deming, with bidder registration from 8 to 9 a.m. and a public preview held the previous afternoon.
The auction is part of the state's process for recovering property taxes unpaid for at least three years. The department said owners received multiple notices about their overdue taxes and the planned sale before their properties were offered. Proceeds will be used to pay the delinquent taxes, with any excess returned to the former property owners.
“After exhausting all efforts to collect overdue taxes, the department proceeds to auction properties,” Taxation and Revenue Secretary Stephanie Schardin Clarke said in a news release. “This large delinquent property tax auction is an efficient way for the state to recover overdue taxes and even, in most cases, send excess revenue to the former property owners.”
