New York State Awards $6 Million to Support Millrace Park in Buffalo's Larkinville Neighborhood

Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Oct. 21 a $6 million State grant to support construction of Millrace Park, a new public park in Buffalo's Larkinville neighborhood, immediately adjacent to the city's lower east side. The grant will be administered by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY). The park, at 822 Seneca Street, bordered by Seneca, Lord and Seymour Streets, is slated to open by fall 2028.

Millrace Park will be owned and operated by the not-for-profit Millrace Park Inc, with amenities including a playground, mini-golf, tetherball, bocce, a tennis court, restrooms, a passive lawn, shade structures and seating. The project costs about $8 million in total, with $1 million from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, $1 million from the Zemsky Family Foundation including the land donation, $250,000 from National Grid, and City of Buffalo support for surrounding sidewalks and curbs.

“Investing in such a creative public space like Millrace Park while encouraging private-sector investment in nearby properties is the best of both worlds,” Governor Hochul said. DASNY President and CEO Robert J. Rodriguez said State funding can support neighborhood revitalization while encouraging additional private investment, bringing a new gathering place to Buffalo's Larkin District.
