Virginia Flags at Half-Staff for Army Maj. Bianca C. Wilkerson: Order in Effect October 22 at Government Buildings Statewide

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger on October 21 ordered flags flown at half-staff on all state and local government buildings and grounds on Thursday, October 22, in memory of U.S. Army Maj. Bianca C. Wilkerson. Flags are to be lowered at sunrise on October 22 and remain at half-staff until sunset.
According to the governor's order, Wilkerson, a Norfolk native, graduated from Maury High School in Norfolk and earned a bachelor's degree in history from Virginia Commonwealth University. Inspired by her grandfather's military service, she joined the Army Reserve after college, was commissioned as a second lieutenant and served as a transportation officer before moving to active duty. Her career included service with the 1st Armored Division and the 25th Infantry Division; in 2023 she became company commander of the Huntington Beach Recruiting Company in California, and at the time of her death she was the G4 supply and services chief with U.S. Army Central and Third Army at Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina.
According to Army information reported by The Zebra, she died on September 18 while supporting overseas operations and was promoted posthumously from captain to major. Beyond her service, Wilkerson was an accomplished musician and marathon runner who loved hiking and traveling and volunteered to help animals; her family remembered her generosity.
In the order, Spanberger offered her deepest condolences to the Wilkerson family and said a grateful Commonwealth honors her selfless service to the nation, Virginia and her community.
