Wyoming Legislative Committee Sends Election Bills to the 2027 Session

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · States · GSM News

A Wyoming legislative interim committee voted on October 22 to send eight of 13 election-related bills to the 2027 legislative session, with many receiving support from Freedom Caucus members or lawmakers aligned with the caucus. The bills advancing are HB 83, requiring pen-and-paper ballots; HB 84 and HB 85, prohibiting drop boxes and ballot harvesting; HB 87, requiring hand counting for recounts; HB 88, requiring poll watchers from each political party to be able to view polling locations; HB 89, requiring independent candidates to be unaffiliated; HB 90, updating acceptable identification for voting; and HB 91, specifying that duly elected party officials are members of county central committees.

Four bills were held for the next meeting: HB 86 (random hand-count audits of precincts), HB 92 (recall of elected municipal officials), HB 94 (changes to post-election audit procedures) and HB 95 (hand counting of all ballots). HB 97, which would change the date for primary party-affiliation changes, was tabled indefinitely. Some speakers raised concerns about election security, arguing the public record does not show a fraud problem; Marguerite Herman of the League of Women Voters of Wyoming said there has been no evidence that current election statutes allow fraud or mistakes. The committee will hold its final interim meeting on November 17 and 18 in Cheyenne before the 2027 session begins on January 12.
