Illinois' Only Statewide Historic Preservation Nonprofit Names New President: Frank Butterfield Confirmed

Landmarks Illinois, the only statewide historic preservation nonprofit organization in Illinois, announced on October 22 the appointment of Frank Butterfield as president and CEO. Butterfield previously served as chief operating officer and had been acting as interim president and CEO since July; he now takes the role on a permanent basis.
Butterfield has served the organization for more than a decade: he joined in 2013 as director of its Springfield office, expanding community outreach and advocacy statewide, and was promoted to chief operating officer in 2021, overseeing daily operations and finances. He led the development and implementation of the organization's latest five-year strategic roadmap, the 'Transformational Plan,' and headed the acquisition of the Illinois Main Street community development network, which focuses on commercial corridors, downtowns and small business economic development. Board chair Ron Clewer said Butterfield's devotion to the mission and his operational leadership make him the ideal person to lead the organization into its next phase. Butterfield previously directed the Wisconsin field office of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Boston College and a master's degree in historic preservation from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Founded in 1971, Landmarks Illinois is a membership-based organization dedicated to the preservation and reuse of significant places across the state.
