Maine Women's Lobby Makes First-Ever U.S. Senate Endorsement, Backing Troy Jackson

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Maine Women's Lobby, a traditionally nonpartisan organization, announced its first-ever endorsement in a U.S. Senate race at an October 22 press conference in Augusta, backing Democratic candidate Troy Jackson against Republican incumbent Sen. Susan Collins.

"If we want to secure rights and health and safety for women in Maine, we need to make sure we are electing people who are representing our needs in Augusta and D.C., and endorsements are an important way that we can help do that," said the group's executive director, Destie Hohman Sprague, adding that Jackson has fought for women's labor rights for years.

According to Maine Newsroom, the press conference also pushed back against a television ad by the Republican super PAC Senate Leadership Fund that used photos of three former state senators who had served with Jackson. Former state Sen. Rebecca Millett said the ad placed a black bar over her eyes, "implying we are victims or villains." Former state Sen. Cathy Breen and Portland Mayor Mark Dion also attended, saying Jackson had helped pass legislation benefiting women during his time in the legislature.

Jackson, a fifth-generation logger from Allagash, has served in the Maine Legislature since 2002 and was state Senate president from 2018 to 2024. The race is seen as one that could decide control of the U.S. Senate; outside groups have spent tens of millions of dollars, and polls show a close contest. Election Day is November 3.
