House Speaker Johnson Travels to Chehalis to Campaign for Braun as Washington's 3rd District House Race Heats Up

U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson traveled to Chehalis in southwestern Washington on Wednesday, October 21, to campaign for Republican congressional candidate John Braun, 13 days before the November 3 election. It is Johnson's third visit to the district this cycle. 'We fly all over the country; the Speaker's job is crazy, campaigning everywhere nonstop,' Johnson said. 'This is going to be a very close race, and everyone knows how important this seat is.'
Braun is president of Braun Northwest and the state senator for the 20th Legislative District; his opponent is incumbent Democratic Rep. Marie Glusenkamp Perez. The seat is viewed as pivotal to control of the U.S. House and has drawn national attention. Braun said he has been fighting for 14 months and 'feels good, but won't stop until the finish.' Glusenkamp Perez met with voters on Tuesday evening; her campaign manager, Tim Gowen, responded that super PACs aligned with Johnson and Trump have spent more than $10 million in the district: 'When Washington party leaders pay your bills, you have to listen to them'; he also accused Braun of supporting Trump's health care cuts, which would cause more than 25,000 people in southwest Washington to lose coverage.
On polling, a Change Research survey conducted October 19-21 (551 likely voters, margin of error plus or minus 4.3 points, released October 22) shows Glusenkamp Perez leading narrowly, 45% to 44%; the Cook Political Report has shifted the district's rating from 'Toss Up' to 'Lean Democratic.' Voting is under way.
