Trump Administration College Accreditation Overhaul Sent to White House OIRA for Review

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · Federal · GSM News

Washington — The Trump administration's proposed regulations to overhaul college accreditation have been sent to the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) for review, Bloomberg Law reported on October 22. The proposed regulations, RIN 1840-AD82, are now at OIRA, according to OIRA's website. The proposal represents one of the most expansive attempts at remaking the century-old college accreditation system.

The proposal includes provisions to ban universities' diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives that the Trump administration views as discriminatory, and to measure student outcomes after graduation. Accreditation is the gatekeeper for federal student aid: colleges must be accredited by an Education Department-recognized accreditor in order to receive federal student aid, and accreditors are entrusted by the federal government to certify a college's access to that aid.

According to earlier reporting by Inside Higher Ed, if the process is completed by November 1, the rule would take effect on July 1, 2027. The outcome of the OIRA review will determine whether the overhaul can proceed on that schedule.
