Barclays reported third-quarter results on October 22, with pretax profit rising 12% year on year to £2.3 billion, up from £2.1 billion a year earlier but slightly below the £2.4 billion analysts had expected, Reuters reported. The bank also announced a new £500 million (about $669.85 million) share buyback.

Investment banking revenue came in at £3.1 billion, below the expected £3.3 billion. Equities trading revenue jumped 47%, outpacing the 37% average gain at the five largest U.S. banks, while fixed income trading revenue fell 19%, a steeper drop than the 5% average decline among U.S. peers.

UK Defense Secretary John Healey has warned that the budget due from the Chancellor of the Exchequer on October 28 could pose risks to Britain's big banks.
