Shanghai's SHINE Facility Produces First Light; the 8 GeV Hard X-Ray Free-Electron Laser Will Be One of Only Two of Its Kind Worldwide

China's hard X-ray free-electron laser facility SHINE has produced its first light, Xinhua reported on October 21, citing an October 15 announcement by ShanghaiTech University. The facility's 4 GeV continuous-wave superconducting linear accelerator has been commissioned, and 18 undulators — each 4 meters long with a 55-millimeter magnetic period — are in operation.
Construction of SHINE began in April 2018, with ShanghaiTech University as the project's legal entity. When complete, the facility will reach 8 GeV, cover a photon energy range of 0.2 to 15 keV and operate at repetition rates of up to 1 MHz. It will be one of only two facilities of its kind in the world, the other being LCLS-II-HE in the United States. Completion and commissioning are targeted for the end of 2027.
