Chinese Travelers Reported Missing After Trips to Thailand; Thai Tourism Minister Says Most Were Deceived Before Departure

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · World News · GSM News

A series of cases in which Chinese travelers went missing after arriving in Thailand, with some believed to have been taken to the Thai-Myanmar border area, has drawn wide attention. Thai media and other outlets report that victims were typically lured to Thailand with offers of high-paying jobs, business inspections, investment cooperation or livestream-performance invitations, and were then transported to border areas after arrival.

Surasak, Thailand's Minister of Tourism and Sports, responded at Government House on October 20, saying that ordinary tourists are not forcibly abducted and that most victims had already been deceived before leaving home. He said checkpoints are in place along the Thai-Myanmar border and that Thailand will further tighten border controls. Foreign Minister Sihasak added that travel advisories concerning Thailand should be proportionate to the actual situation.

Based on verified facts, Chinese travelers heading to Thailand should note the following: verify the identity and credentials of anyone offering a "high-paying job" with free board and airfare; stay alert and keep in contact with family if pickup arrangements or itineraries differ markedly from what was promised; and exercise particular caution around the Thai-Myanmar border region.
