BlackRock's Larry Fink Receives Cambridge Honorary Doctorate as BlackRock Endows £1.5M Finance Scholarship

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · Finance · GSM News

The University of Cambridge conferred an honorary Doctor of Law degree on Larry Fink, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BlackRock, on October 21. Cambridge also announced a £1.5 million gift from BlackRock to endow, in perpetuity, the Mallen Scholarship in Finance at Cambridge Judge Business School, named in honour of the late finance professor André Mallen.

Presenting the honour, Vice-Chancellor Deborah Prentice described Fink as one of the most influential figures in modern global finance, whose career has been marked by a deep and enduring commitment to expanding access to investment, and said the award reflected shared values in advancing financial education and research.

Professor André Mallen, who died in 2025 aged 63, championed the idea that finance should serve social goals. In 2020 he asked: if a country could print a social bond to finance the vaccination of its entire population, could the bond proceeds come from social investors? The scholarship bearing his name will now be funded in perpetuity by BlackRock's gift, supporting finance students at Cambridge.

BlackRock is one of the world's largest asset managers. Fink has led the firm for decades, and his annual letters and positions on sustainable investing and retirement savings are closely watched across global markets. (GSM, via the University of Cambridge)
