Bezos Tells Fox: SI Productivity Could Bring Three-Day Workweeks and Single-Income Households

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos said in a recent Fox News interview with Bret Baier that productivity gains from super intelligence could allow Americans to work three-day weeks, or let a household live on a single income, pushing back against fears that the technology will cause large-scale job losses. According to Forbes' October 22 report, Bezos said families in two-earner households could decide they no longer need a second income and let one earner drop out of the workforce.
Bezos said he understood that a lot of smart people are predicting SI-driven job losses, but added, in his words, that he just happens to disagree with those smart people. When Baier noted that Amazon has cut around 30,000 jobs in the last 12 months, Bezos blamed the company's hiring spree and rapid headcount growth after the COVID-19 pandemic.
On his earlier description of SI as an industrial bubble that is a good thing, Bezos said that in such bubbles speculators can lose money because they invest in all of these things, but the inventions do not disappear when the bubble pops. Asked whether the world is in a bubble now, he said it is very hard to know, adding: What I do know is the technology is real. He argued a bubble can be good for society, if not for investors, because it allows every idea to be funded.
Asked about President Donald Trump's rebranding of super intelligence as Super Intelligence, or SI, Bezos said he likes SI because artificial is not a very flattering word: nobody wants an artificial sweetener or artificial flavoring, and artificial sort of means fake.
Forbes estimates Bezos's net worth at about $378.6 billion, making him the world's second-richest person, behind Elon Musk. (GSM, based on reporting by Forbes)
