FCC Uses New Authority for the First Time: Two Devices With Huawei HiSilicon Surveillance Chips Barred From U.S. Market

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · Technology · GSM News

Washington: The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said on October 22 that it has blocked two devices from the U.S. market that contain foreign surveillance chips produced by HiSilicon, a subsidiary of China's Huawei. It is the first time the agency has exercised this authority under new rules.

According to the FCC, the barred devices are a dashboard camera and a wireless video transmitter, both containing HiSilicon chips. The agency said HiSilicon advertises its chip as "designed for the surveillance market," including "detection algorithms for human faces."

The FCC did not name the brands or models of the two devices. Huawei and HiSilicon have not publicly responded. (GSM, reporting from Reuters)
