New U.S. National Strategy for Financial Literacy Released: Youth Financial Capability Tops Four Priority Areas

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · Life · GSM News

The Financial Literacy and Education Commission (FLEC) released a new National Strategy for Financial Literacy on October 2. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), a member agency of the commission, said the same day that it supports the new strategy, which guides nationwide action. The commission is chaired by the Secretary of the Treasury and includes the heads of 23 federal agencies plus the White House Domestic Policy Council.

The strategy sets four priority areas: youth financial capability, building a foundation of basic financial skills starting in childhood and young adulthood; saving and investing, including promoting awareness of new savings and investment vehicles such as Trump Accounts for children; digital financial literacy, enabling the safe and confident use of digital financial products and services; and education on avoiding fraud and scams.

The CFPB said it has developed evidence-based financial education resources, and that its youth financial education framework identifies three building blocks children develop: executive functioning skills, positive financial habits and behaviors, and financial knowledge and decision-making skills. The full strategy is posted on MyMoney.gov, the government's financial education website.
