CMS Releases 2027 Medicare Advantage and Part D Star Ratings: About 37 Percent of MA-PD Contracts Earn Four Stars or Higher

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · Health · GSM News

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released the 2027 Star Ratings for Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Part D prescription drug plans. The ratings are published on Medicare Plan Finder for the 2027 open enrollment period, which runs from October 15 through December 7, 2026, and will affect 2028 Medicare Advantage quality bonus payments.

According to CMS, approximately 37 percent of Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MA-PD) contracts to be offered in 2027, a total of 188 contracts, earned four stars or higher. Weighted by enrollment, about 71 percent of MA-PD enrollees are currently in contracts that will have four or more stars in 2027. Fifteen MA-PD contracts earned five stars and carry the high-performing icon, while four contracts were identified as consistently low performers. Among stand-alone Part D plans, about 27 percent, or 11 contracts, received four or more stars, covering about 22 percent of enrollees weighted by enrollment, up from 2 percent in 2026.

CMS added two measures for 2027, covering concurrent use of opioids and benzodiazepines and use of multiple anticholinergic medications in older adults, and raised the weight of the measures on improving or maintaining physical and mental health from one to three. MA-PD contracts are rated on up to 43 quality and performance measures, and stand-alone Part D contracts on up to 13.
