U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on Oct. 22 said its Tucson leadership held a press conference at the U.S. Border Patrol's Tucson Sector headquarters to highlight end of fiscal year border security successes.

Acting Deputy Chief Patrol Agent Stephen Cristinzio said increased border security measures, stronger enforcement of Title 8 immigration laws and more manpower, including Border Patrol agents and Department of War military personnel, together with more infrastructure including new border barriers and surveillance technology, reduced illegal border crossings in the Tucson Sector from more than 460,000 in fiscal 2024 to about 16,000 in fiscal 2026, a 96% reduction. He also credited the Homeland Security Task Force, other federal partners and local law enforcement.

Cristinzio said that in the past 17 months there have been no releases of illegal aliens into the interior of the country. Throughout fiscal 2026, CBP officers at Arizona ports of entry intercepted more than 15,000 pounds of illicit narcotics, including fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and marijuana.
