Missouri Launches Operation Show-Me the Money: State and U.S. Department of Justice Target Benefit Program Fraud

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe announced Operation Show-Me the Money at a press conference on October 22 at the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City, in Cole County, Missouri. Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri Thomas C. Albus and U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri R. Matthew Price joined the announcement. The governor's office described it as an unprecedented partnership between the State of Missouri and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to aggressively identify, investigate and prosecute fraud involving taxpayer-funded benefit programs.
The governor's office said the operation will focus on state programs that distribute federal funds to entities and individuals. The Kehoe Administration, the Missouri Attorney General's Office and the DOJ will expand cross-departmental data sharing, and dedicated staff from the Attorney General's Medicaid Fraud Control Unit will work with the DOJ to strengthen coordination and investigative efforts. Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe said in the release that Missouri is no place for fraud and that those who cheat the system and steal from taxpayers will be held accountable. Attorney General Catherine Hanaway and the two U.S. Attorneys also said in the release that combining federal investigative and prosecutorial resources with the state's knowledge of its benefit programs will help detect fraud sooner and build stronger cases.
The governor's office said the operation will use a three-pronged approach: first, referrals from existing state agency investigations and tips from frontline program staff; second, targeted reviews of individual benefit programs, beginning with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), to identify suspicious activity and vulnerabilities; and third, data analysis across multiple state agencies and programs to detect patterns of potential fraud. The office said findings may inform future administrative changes, program improvements or legislative solutions, and noted that Governor Kehoe recently joined U.S. Vice President JD Vance in signing a pledge to protect Americans from fraud.
