John Mayer Signs With Mercury Records, Billboard Reports

Billboard reported that American singer, songwriter and guitarist John Mayer has signed with Mercury Records. The report, by Lyndsey Havens, was published by Billboard on Oct. 22; the subscription email carried only the headline, with limited body text available.
According to Billboard, Mayer is also launching his own imprint, Sob Rock Records. Mercury Records is a label owned by Universal Music Group.
Mayer's most recent studio album, Sob Rock, was released in July 2021 by Columbia Records. Public records show he said in March 2022 that he had decided not to renew his Columbia recording agreement, and he had not signed with a major label in the years since.
The signing comes as Mayer's first solo single in five years is set for release on Oct. 23. The song began as a voice memo and was previewed in mid-October.
Specific terms of the new deal, including its length, distribution arrangements and ownership of master recordings, have not been confirmed by an authoritative source beyond the Billboard headline report and are not stated here; a follow-up will be published if the label or Mayer's team releases further details.
