The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) announced on October 21 that Chief Engineer Earl Lewis will retire from the Division of Water Resources (DWR) effective November 20, 2026. Lewis has served as Chief Engineer for six years, leading the division's administration of more than 30,000 active water rights, four interstate water compacts, and the state's program regulating dams and other water structures.

Lewis has worked in Kansas water resources for nearly 35 years: he began at KDA-DWR in 1992, then spent more than 20 years at the Kansas Water Office, including two years as its director, before being appointed Chief Engineer.

Governor Laura Kelly said water has been a priority of her administration and thanked Lewis for his diligence. Lewis said it has been an honor to serve in the role and that the division's team will keep its focus on the issues facing Kansas water users.
