Maine: Governor Welcomes Federal Release of up to 315,000 Barrels From Northeast Heating Oil Reserve

Maine Governor Janet Mills issued a statement on October 21 welcoming the U.S. Department of Energy's authorization to release up to 315,000 barrels of fuel oil from the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve, saying she hopes the move will provide Maine residents with meaningful financial relief as the seasons change.
According to the Governor's Office, Maine depends on heating oil more than any other state, and about half of its homes use oil as their main heat source. Heating oil in Maine reached a record $6.02 a gallon in September, about $740 more to fill a standard 275-gallon tank than a year earlier.
Mills thanked Maine's congressional delegation for pressing for the release and urged approval of more funding for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). She also noted that thousands of eligible residents will begin receiving automatic electric-bill discounts through the state's Low Income Assistance Program, whose funding has grown from $22.5 million in 2025 to $40.5 million in 2026.
